"Tiger Woods is a global symbol of American excellence, devotion, and drive," Trump said.
A Moment of Gratitude
With his mother and children present, Woods delivered a brief but emotional speech, thanking those who stood by him through triumphs and struggles.
"You’ve seen the good and the bad, the highs and the lows, and I would not be in this position without all of your help," Woods said.
A Longstanding Relationship
Trump and Woods have a history both in and outside of golf. They have played together multiple times, and Woods designed a course at a Trump property in Dubai. Trump also named a villa after Woods at his Doral resort in Miami. The president announced the award shortly after Woods’ stunning 2019 Masters win, which capped an incredible career comeback.
Criticism and Praise
While many praised Woods for his achievements, some critics questioned his decision to accept the award. Writer Rick Reilly, who has written about Trump’s approach to golf, suggested Woods should have declined the honor, citing Trump’s controversial reputation.
Joining Golf’s Elite
Woods is now the fourth golfer to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom, joining Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, and Charlie Sifford. During the ceremony, Woods paid tribute to Sifford, calling him a mentor and revealing he named his son Charlie in his honor.
The award solidifies Woods’ place not just as a golf legend, but as an athlete whose impact extends beyond the sport.
