Students Stage Walkout
Dozens of Duke University graduates walked out of their commencement ceremony Sunday, protesting guest speaker Jerry Seinfeld’s support for Israel amid the Gaza conflict.
Chanting “Free Palestine” and waving flags, the students left the football stadium as Seinfeld spoke.
Mixed Reactions Over Protest
While some attendees cheered Seinfeld, others joined the protest. Videos showed audience members leaving, including one wearing a keffiyeh, symbolizing solidarity with Palestinians.
Despite the protest, Seinfeld’s speech continued without major interruptions. “A lot of you are thinking, ‘I can’t believe they invited this guy.’ Too late,” he quipped, encouraging graduates to use their privilege for good.
Duke University Responds
Duke spokesperson Frank Tramble defended the protesters’ right to express their views peacefully. “We respect everyone’s right to express their opinions without disrupting the celebration of graduates and their families,” he said.
The Duke protest is part of a wave of demonstrations on U.S. campuses tied to the Gaza conflict, which has caused significant casualties on both sides. Students nationwide are calling for university divestment from companies linked to the war and protection for activists.
Other Graduation Protests
Similar protests have occurred elsewhere, including Emerson College, where students carried pro-Palestinian signs during its commencement. Institutions like Columbia and USC have modified or canceled ceremonies due to activism.
Free Expression?
The White House has voiced support for peaceful protests, emphasizing the importance of free expression in academic settings. For many, these moments reflect the growing impact of student activism on global issues.
