In a touching moment that brightened a chilly night, Indiana State Police Sgt. Mike Allen's call for backup turned into an uplifting experience for a young girl.
On the night of March 13th, Sgt. Allen spotted a car driving without its headlights on Beachwood Avenue in West Baden Springs. Recognizing that this could signal impaired driving, he decided to stop the vehicle. What he found, however, was far from a routine situation.
The driver was 16-year-old Hailey Wilson, who was taking her younger stepsister, 12-year-old Selena Moreno, home after a school event. As Sgt. Allen approached, he noticed that Selena looked sad in her beautiful dress and heels.
When he asked Selena how her night went, she replied, “Not really. Nobody would dance with me. I was lonely all night.” Hearing this broke Sgt. Allen’s heart. He felt compelled to make her smile.
After explaining the reason for the stop, Allen asked Selena what her favorite song was. When she said it was “Speechless” by Dan & Shay, he had an idea. “I know it’s cold, but I’ll dance with you out here on the sidewalk,” he offered. Selena was surprised but excited.
Sgt. Allen then called Officer Gideon Ewing for backup, not realizing he was about to witness something special. Officer Ewing thought it was just a regular traffic stop, but when he arrived, he saw Allen dancing with Selena, the song playing softly in the background. Ewing couldn’t resist joining in, joking, “They don’t teach us how to dance in the Academy!”
Selena left with a big smile on her face, feeling much happier. The next day, Sgt. Allen received many supportive messages, including one from Hailey’s dad, Derek Wilson, who shared the heartwarming dance video online.
This story has touched hearts across the country, reminding everyone of the positive impact police officers can have in their communities, one dance at a time.
