At West Point’s graduation parade, one photo captured the attention of thousands. A young man stood in uniform, tears streaming down his face. That man was Second Lieutenant Alix Schoelcher Idrache.

Originally from Haiti, Idrache had just become the Maryland Army National Guard’s first West Point graduate. For him, that moment represented more than an academic achievement. It reflected where he began, where he stood, and the future he had fought so hard to reach.

From Port-au-Prince to West Point

Idrache grew up in a poor neighborhood in Port-au-Prince. He spoke only basic English and had little reason to believe his life would extend beyond the borders of his hometown. In 2009, he joined his father in the United States. His father had come earlier to build a better life for his family.

Though he had few material things to offer, Idrache’s father gave him something more meaningful: a deep belief in the value of education. “Education is the only gift I can always give you,” he would say.

That belief carried Idrache through his early years in the Maryland National Guard and eventually into West Point. There, he not only graduated, but finished at the top of his class in physics. He now continues his journey at the Army Aviation Center of Excellence.

A Dream Once Out of Reach

As a child, Idrache never imagined becoming a pilot. In Haiti, there were no flight schools and no helicopters. It wasn’t a dream he thought was possible. But standing on that graduation field, he had become exactly what he once thought he could never be.
