Obama’s Awkward Voting Moment: “Hands Off My Girlfriend, Mr. President!”

While casting his ballot in Chicago, President Barack Obama had a lighthearted moment when a voter’s fiancé jokingly warned, “Mr. President, don’t touch my girlfriend.”

Obama, standing next to voter Aia Cooper at the time, laughed and replied, “I really wasn’t planning on it.” Turning to Cooper, he teased, “This is an example of a brother just embarrassing you for no reason.”

A Fiancé’s Joke and a Viral Moment

Later in an interview, Cooper admitted she was caught completely off guard by her fiancé Mike Jones’ comment. “I was just shaking,” she said, still in disbelief over the exchange.

Even before Jones chimed in, Cooper said she was nervous. “I was like, ‘Do I have to stand there? I don’t really want to stand there,’” she recalled of voting next to the former president.

A Presidential Wedding Guest?

Despite the awkward moment, the couple later laughed it off and even joked about inviting the Obamas to their wedding. “I wanna meet Michelle,” Cooper added, hoping the First Lady wouldn't take the moment the wrong way.

Obama’s Smooth Comeback

At the end of the encounter, Obama got in a good-natured jab—giving Cooper a hug and a quick kiss on the cheek. “On the cheek, just the cheek – please, Michelle, don’t come after me!” Cooper laughed afterward.

Obama turned to her with a grin and said, “Now, he’s really jealous.”

The day may have started with ballots, but Cooper and Jones left with a once-in-a-lifetime moment—and a story they’ll be telling forever.
